The Mississippi Municipal League honored the city of Charleston as one of its nine 2018 Municipal Excellence Award winners.
At a June 27 luncheon during MML’s annual conference in Biloxi, Charleston was recognized as recipient of the Municipal Excellence Award for Public Works among cities with a population under 10,000.
The city earned the honor for its August 2017 Depot Park improvements project.
Ward 3 Commissioner Tawanda Shannon had identified about $6,000 that was left over from the Parks and Recreation Department budget at the end of the fiscal year. Utilizing those funds, and some playground equipment that was in city storage, Charleston officials, local businesses and a small army of volunteers worked to improve the city park in the Depot area.
“Getting this award is recognition of the efforts by the Charleston mayor, Charleston Board of Commissioners, city Public Works Department, Chambers Concrete, Pamplin Concrete, Herron Construction, Signs Unlimited, countless volunteers and a united community coming together with a common goal,” said Charleston Mayor Sedrick Smith, in commenting on the city honor.
