Mayor's Bike-a-thon held in Charleston

By CLAY MCFERRIN,

The third annual Charleston Mayor’s Bike-a-thon was held Sept. 15.  Nearly 40 community members took advantage of the sunny weather to join Mayor Sedrick Smith for the approximately 3-mile-long round-trip ride through the streets of Charleston. The event began and ended on Chestnut Street adjacent to the Charleston Elementary School gym. A brief health and wellness presentation was given by Lisa Moore, community health director with the Mississippi State Department of Health. The day was capped off by the giveaway of five bicycles and helmets. The bike-a-thon is sponsored by the Charleston Mayoral Health Council. “All riders were engaged, energized and happy,” said Moore, of Charleston, who also is a Health Council member.  “Thanks to all who attended, and special thanks to the Charleston Police Department and Charleston city employees. The Health Council wants everyone to move more for better health.”  (Photo special to The Sun-Sentinel)
