Sumner church serving as collection site for shoebox gifts

By SPECIAL TO THE SUN-SENTINEL,

Sumner Baptist Church is serving as a drop-off location for the Samaritan’s Purse project Operation Christmas Child, joining nearly 5,000 U.S. locations collecting gift-filled shoeboxes.

During the project’s National Collection Week, Nov. 12-19, Tallahatchie County residents will transform empty shoeboxes into gifts of hope filled with fun toys, school supplies and hygiene items. Operation Christmas Child will deliver these shoebox gifts to children living in poverty overseas.

So that the general public may donate gift items for the shoeboxes, the Sumner Baptist Church, located at 400 Cassidy St. in Sumner, will be open for collections every day from Monday, Nov. 12, until Sunday, Nov. 18, from 1-3 p.m., and Monday, Nov. 19, from 8-10 a.m.

For more information on how to participate in Operation Christmas Child or to view gift suggestions, call 662-292-2413 or go online to samaritanspurse.org/occ.

Participants can donate $9 per shoebox gift online through “Follow Your Box” and receive a tracking label to discover its destination.

Those who prefer the convenience of online shopping are invited to browse at samaritanspurse.org/buildonline to select gifts matched to a child’s specific age and gender, then finish packing the virtual shoebox by adding a photo and note of encouragement.
