SUMNER — Alex Gates, age 87, passed away Sunday, September 27.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, October 1, at Sumner Presbyterian Church followed by visitation at the Gates home.
A practicing attorney in Sumner for fifty years, he served in the Army Reserve and was called to active duty several times and was discharged with the rank of First Lieutenant.
He served on the Sumner Town Board, was the city atttorney, and Municipal Judge, and served as president of the Sumner Rotary Club. He also served for several years as the Sumner Fire Chief.
He was a Yazoo Mississippi Delta Levee Board commissioner, the Lower Mississippi River Commission, and the Mississippi congressional delegation, and was instrumental in bringing the Tallahatchie Correctional Authority into being, serving as chairman of the board. He participated in the U.S. Army War College National Security Seminar.
He was preceded in death by his son, William Weems Gates.
He is survived his wife, Lyn Weems Gates; son, George Gates, and three grandsons.
