Reminiscent of Dr. Seuss’ Grinch character, there are many scammers out there who would like nothing more than to bilk honest, unsuspecting folk out of their hard-earned money or other goods, thereby dampening their Christmas spirit. ’Tis the season.
Recently, we wrote in this space about the importance of remaining diligent when considering charitable donations during the holiday season. That remains an important consideration, as telemarketing calls and direct mail solicitations continue.
It is a shame, not to mention a crime, that some people would prey on the goodness of others, but none of us should be naive enough to think that it does not happen every day — even right here in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi — and that it cannot happen to us unless we stay on our toes, and that means staying grounded.
Remember, you are not going to win a lottery or a contest that you did not enter. It is highly unlikely that someone whom you do not know is going to bequeath a large sum of money to you. In the unlikely event that you supposedly do win a lottery or contest that you did not enter or inherit a fortune from a long lost uncle, don’t walk, but run, from any such notification that requires you to pay a “handling” or “processing” fee for the privilege. That’s staying grounded 101 stuff.
Bottom line is, be careful both when it comes to “giving” and “receiving.” Don’t get scammed.
