Asia Zahara Scott was recently presented with a $1,000 check as the recipient of this year’s Birdia Keglar Legacy Scholarship.
Scott is a 2026 honor graduate of Charleston High School, where she earned a 3.75 grade-point average.
The daughter of Andre Scott and Francesca Scott of Oakland, Asia plans to attend Northwest Mississippi Community College this fall to study Construction Management Technology. Her goal is to build a career in construction and later become a vocational teacher so she can help students develop valuable skills and achieve their goals.
Asia is passionate about mentoring young people and encouraging them to pursue careers that interest them, regardless of stereotypes or expectations. She hopes to use her education, leadership and experiences to make a positive impact in her community and help others turn their dreams into reality.
Asia also serves as Sunday school secretary at her church.
The Birdia Keglar Legacy Scholarship was created in order to recognize a female student who embodies the spirit of Birdia Keglar through her displayed leadership ability in school and community activism.
The recipient must be interested in attending a two- or four-year college or university, or currently be registered as a full-time student in good standing with a college or university. Proof of enrollment is required.
Applicants must reside in Tallahatchie County and must submit two letters of recommendation, including one from a principal, counselor or teacher, and one from a community leader.
Applicants must write an essay on how they embody the attributes of Birdia Keglar through their leadership abilities and community involvement.
Applications are reviewed by select committee members from several states. The winner is presented with a check for $1,000 at the annual Birdia Keglar Legacy Celebration. As part of this year’s June 6 event, presentation of the scholarship was made at New Town Missionary Baptist Church in Charleston.
