How much do we have left?
Time.
I haven’t really thought about how long I will live; in fact, I may have been a bit careless about my life at certain times in the past.
As I age, feeling the effects of time more and more in my puny little human body, I do think about the fact that the time I have experienced is more than the time I have ahead of me here on earth. The reality of the passing of time comes home to us in different ways depending on our view of death and what happens after death.
How do you view aging?
How do you view your death and what will happen? Have you considered that what you do now will affect your eternal future?
I love watching the seasons pass on our little bit of land we get to call our own for a while. It is only ours for a time. This morning I see the little birds at the bird bath seemingly surprised at the ice skimmed on the surface where they usually drink. They need someone to break that hard layer and let them get to the life-sustaining water they are looking for.
Sometimes we need someone to break the surface of the day to day, taking life and our time for granted, and let us get to the spiritual water that sustains us eternally. Jesus said to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” The living water is for us now and for us in the future of eternity. Ask Him!
Dare to look! Dare to examine what you really believe. I heard of a woman who was active in church and church work all her life, but when her son died she realized she didn’t know what she believed about what happens after death. Her words were haunting, “But where is he?” She turned to her Christian friend to help find her answer.
When my son died, I longed to see him one more time, talk to him one more time, and hug him one more time. I went over my last times with him. I thought about what I would have said and done if I had known he would leave me so soon. It was as if there was a door I couldn’t find to open to see him. He was close but unreachable.
Jesus gives us comfort when he says, “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” The saving relationship Jesus offers us in John 3:16 is for all: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
Do you believe? Have saving faith?
Break the ice on your heart and soul and open your arms and life to the Savior, Jesus Christ.
