Warm and pleasant greetings to all. We hope you are enjoying a good week.
How are your resolutions for the new year going? I don’t officially make New Year’s resolutions, I make them day to day.
When January arrives, I only think of getting a new calendar and getting familiar with writing the number of the new year. I was thinking that if I knew someone whose telephone number was 2025, I could think of that each time I had to write down the year. I remembered 2018 by thinking about our phone number, 2018, each time I wrote it.
A big, hot bowl of soup or chill is the perfect meal when the temperatures are low. What a good time to plug in the slow cooker and enjoy the aroma while you wait.
As the colder days may keep us inside more, don’t let it get you too confined and depressed. You are smart in finding something or maybe discovering something new and exciting to engage in.
I took time to visit the closet and actually talked to some clothes, making a decision. It may sound silly “talking to your closet” (and yourself sometimes) but it is good to hear yourself talk. Sometimes you need good advice!
January has a lot of special days and weeks that you may choose to celebrate or make up on your own. Celebrate the people, places and things you enjoy to start the new year.
Monday, Jan. 20, is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.
On April 4, 1968, at the age of 39, Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, as he stood on the balcony of the hotel. King was there to lead a march in support of striking sanitation workers.
This Monday, take the opportunity to celebrate, commemorate and honor the life, legacy and the impact of Dr. King. This is the 30th anniversary as a National Day of Service. The strategic theme for 2025 is “Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice, and Democracy in the Spirit of Nonviolence 365.”
The 18th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade in Charleston is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 20, at the noon hour. Parade organizers, Carolyn Johnson (662-647-1346) and Lillie Smith (662-625-2055) may be reached for additional info.
Monday, Jan. 20, is also Inauguration Day. This is the 60th presidential inauguration, being the second inauguration for the 45th and 47th president of the United States.
Mississippi Valley State University’s Mean Green Marching Band was invited to play in the Inaugural Parade, which will follow ceremonies including the administration of the presidential oath of office.
We expect our school students to bring home positive report cards this week and take Monday to reflect, learn and find a way to do something special for their family and community. Students can be proud of what they can do, the person they are and the difference they can make.
Enjoy life today. Be blessed.
