Warm and pleasant greetings from our community. We hope you had an enjoyable Fourth of July weekend celebration or maybe took some time to relax and chill with some cool refreshments.
We are reminded to take special precautions during the hottest days.
The forecast thunderstorms did come with lightning, wind and rain last Wednesday, shortly after 7 p.m. Our community was without electrical power until around 11 p.m.
National Ice Cream Month is celebrated in July. Hope you will enjoy your favorite flavor just for fun and celebrate in your own way. Do you know anyone who does not like some flavor of ice cream? I like a scoop of ice cream occasionally. Ice cream is sometimes on my grocery list.
Growing up, we had homemade ice cream anytime, at least once or twice a week, especially during the summertime. Many times our mother made peach, strawberry or banana and vanilla, which was the main flavor. When we tasted lemon, we “figured” that the custard may have gotten a bit scorched! Our mother loved making ice cream and we enjoyed it, especially on Sunday afternoons. We ate ice cream with the bowl full. Anytime during the week it was not surprising to see her getting things ready to crank up the freezer. I imagine we could have afforded an electric ice cream freezer if they were available back then. But four or five pairs of hands could do this job and we enjoyed being together for the fun of it. Each one counted 100 turns before the next one took over; you had to keep the crank turning so it wouldn’t freeze up. Momma would check between turns to see if it was “ready” and she would do turns.
Near the end, the last “turner” may not have to count as many, as it was almost done! I have not used the electric ice cream freezer or the ice cream/yogurt maker in a while, but I will before the summer is over.
As a community, we send congratulations to the editor and publisher of our weekly newspaper, The Sun-Sentinel, winning 20 major awards including the top “General Excellence” category. We commend you for doing the best in gathering information, printing, publishing and distributing the newspaper across Tallahatchie County. Our congratulations to all individuals and groups making news each week. This gives the opportunity to share with residents across the county a connection to people, places and traditions, showing connection to where we live, worship, work and socialize.
Keep enjoying the summertime. It’s the best time to relax, play and have fun with family and friends and enjoy life. Be blessed.
