Suit Up! (Part 5): The Helmet of Salvation
In any organization, the head plays a crucial role in ensuring its survival and success. This principle also holds true in the spiritual realm.
The "Helmet of Salvation" serves as a metaphorical comparison for believers, who must safeguard their minds from the adversities and challenges of life. Just as a leader provides directions for an organization, the mind governs our thoughts and actions, and directs our spiritual path.
Romans 10:9 highlights the moment of salvation for a believer, proclaiming that if one confesses with their mouth that Jesus is Lord and believes in their heart that God raised Him from the dead, they will be saved. Yet, there is salvation work that is ongoing to maintain the commitment made to God during that initial confession.
Just as an organization’s leader must stay aware and work to ensure its well-being, believers must also be diligent in protecting their minds. Joyce Meyer, a well-known preacher, addresses this very notion in her book, “The Battlefield of the Mind: Winning the Battle in Your Mind.” She explains that the enemy often targets the mind, as it is the battleground where our thoughts and decisions are formed. If allowed to run unchecked, negative and ungodly thoughts can lead us away from the path God has laid out for us.
The mind shapes attitudes and actions. Therefore, as believers striving to follow the teachings of Jesus, we must equip ourselves with the Helmet of Salvation at all times. Ephesians 6:17 tells us to take on the Helmet of Salvation so that we can be protected from the various temptations and distractions presented by the devil. As John 10:10 warns us, the devil comes to steal, kill and destroy. Since the battle begins in our thoughts, if we guard our minds, we can prevent the enemy from gaining a foothold in our lives.
To effectively use the Helmet of Salvation, we must be intentional about what we allow to influence our thoughts. Filling our minds with scripture provides a strong defense against ungodly thoughts and lifestyles.
Colossians 3:2 encourages us to set our minds on things above, where Christ is seated, rather than on earthly things. In Romans 12:2 we are urged not to conform to the patterns of this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. These passages remind us that our thoughts can either lead us closer to God or further away from an intimate relationship with God.
The Helmet of Salvation is vital for every believer dedicated to walking a path of faith. Just as the head of an organization is essential for its success, maintaining a guarded and protected mind is crucial for spiritual survival.
The battle really begins in the mind. Therefore, we must nurture a strong mind anchored in faith. Equipping ourselves with scripture and remaining focused is how believers navigate the challenges of life, ensuring that they remain aligned with God’s will. In this manner, we are prepared to face any spiritual battles that may arise.
The path to salvation may begin with a moment of confession, but keeping the Helmet of Salvation firmly in place allows us to live out that salvation faithfully every day.
