If you can read this article, thank a teacher! OK, so I know that you have probably heard that short phrase a thousand times over the years, but have you really taken the time to think about what it means and all that goes into being a teacher?
I have to admit that when I entered the teaching profession all those years ago, I really did not have a clue what lay ahead on my educational journey. I just thought that I would write a few lesson plans, decorate a few bulletin boards and create a few tests for my students. Every student would never miss class, always do their homework and love English as much as I did. Boy, was I wrong!
Fast-forward years down the road when I viewed the teaching profession through the eyes of my two sons. Although I did not always agree with every decision that their teachers made, I supported them while in front of my children. Long nights of homework at the kitchen table and weekends working on projects became the norm in their fast-paced, highly regarded school district in Ohio.
Fast-forward even more years down that educational road, and today I hear the excitement as my oldest granddaughter explains her perfect score on her first-grade spelling test and her excitement in learning how to read. I must admit that not only as an educator, but more importantly, as Nana, it makes me very proud.
So, what does this tale of an educational journey have to do with CARE?
CARE will resume our weekly “Thank a Teacher Thursday” segments starting in February. Take a minute to nominate that teacher, coach, Sunday school teacher or counselor who has had a special place in your life. Your nominee can be teaching currently or retired. They do not have to teach in Charleston but they should be from Tallahatchie County.
Send their name to CARE via Facebook Messenger, call CARE (662-647-0942) or email CARE at care1092@att.net. CARE will reach out to the educator to notify them. Weekly winners who are spotlighted will also receive a free tea from Charleston Nutrition. (Thank you to Charleston Nutrition for partnering with CARE to support our teachers!)
Now, stop, take a moment and think about those deserving teachers past and present. Nominate them for the recognition that they deserve. And, we will see you and your teacher nominations at CARE in 2025!
