TUTWILER — Carla Ross has been selected as the executive director of the Tutwiler Community Education Center, effective June 1.
Ross becomes only the second person to serve in this capacity in the 24-year history of the center, following the departure of Sister Maureen Delaney last December to accept a national leadership position with the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary.
Ross is the former program coordinator for the Individual Development Accounts Program (IDA) with Southern Bancorp Community Partners in Clarksdale, where she managed their Asset Builders Program. Her program helped Mississippi Delta residents save funds to purchase a home, start a small business or further their education.
Prior to that, she served as the regional coordinator for the America-Reads Mississippi AmeriCorps program at Delta State University in Cleveland, placing individuals from the community in various school districts to tutor students in the area of reading.
She has also served as assistant director at the St. Gabriel Mercy Center in Mound Bayou, where she supervised all educational programs, coordinated community service group activities and worked independently to develop methods and procedures to enhance existing programs.
Ross is a native of Mound Bayou, a small Delta community very similar in size to Tutwiler. Officials at the Tutwiler center say they are confident in Ross’ ability to continue their tradition of meeting the needs of children and families by developing programs that enrich lives and enable dreams.
