What started out as a fun day of fishing on Grenada Lake, nearly ended in tragedy for Corey Kendall of Cascilla and his family.
Kendall, his wife Destiny Kendall, son Colby and daughter Taylor, recently headed out for a family day of fishing on the lake. High winds created heavy waves that filled the boat with water, eventually causing it to capsize, tossing the family into the cold waters of Grenada Lake.
“It was a rough day,” Kendall said. “We headed across the lake to fish and were having a good time when the waves started to get high. That’s when we decided to head back to the shore. We never made it back.”
The waves filled the back of the boat with water, according to Kendall. After the boat took in too much water, Kendall’s wife called 911 for help. The excess water caused the boat batteries to shorten out.
“The motor shut down when the battery shorted and the waves from the motor put more water in the boat, causing it to capsize,” Kendall said. “We all had our life jackets or we would not be here today.”
Bruce Thornton of Grenada picked up the family from the water with help from Mike Neese of Grenada.
After getting the family back to shore, EMS transported them to University of Mississippi Medical Center-Grenada, where they were treated for hypothermia.
Deputies with the Grenada County Sheriff’s Office, first responders with Tie Plant Volunteer Fire Department, MedStat Emergency Medical Services personnel, park rangers with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and officials with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks all responded to the scene to assist in the rescue.
