Donnie "Donnell" Tenner Sr. has been hired to be the next chief of police in Charleston.
Contacted by The Sun-Sentinel Wednesday evening, Mayor Sedrick Smith confirmed Tenner's hiring by the Charleston Board of Commissioners, who he said took the action in special session on Monday (Sept. 18).
"They voted unanimously to hire Donnell Tenner," said Smith, who noted that Tenner will begin his duties with the city on Oct. 1.
According to his Facebook profile, Tenner has been working for the Grenada Police Department.
Tenner is a native of Charleston and previously was a patrolman on the city's police force. He also is a former teacher and assistant coach in the East Tallahatchie School District.
He will fill the position left vacant by the city board's recent firing of police chief Luther Folson Jr.
Despite several other applicants for the top cop post, Tenner had been rumored to be the leading candidate for the job.
