Suddenly, I felt overwhelmed!
I was in an ice cream shop enjoying one of the 32 different, delicious flavors, and it hit me.
A lady was sitting on a bench, her silver hair done, her ankles crossed lady-like, her arms crossed over her purse in her lap, and a smile on her face. Feelings of loss and missing my mother washed over me, taking me by surprise.
My seeing the lady triggered my grief.
What to do?
I recognized my loss and sadness at not being able to experience new things with her, I felt the sadness, and I let it wash over me and pass on.
I depended on my faith in Jesus Christ.
I believe it when Jesus told us He was going to prepare a place for us — for His followers who had faith in Him as their Savior and Lord and believed He was the only Son of God, who came to pay the penalty for our sins as He willingly died on the cross, rose again on the third day and ascended to heaven. And I believe I will see my mama again in heaven some day when I pass on and join her.
“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” (John 14:3)
When we feel the pain of grief, we are not alone. “The Lord is near to the broken-hearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18) God can give us the comfort we need and lift us up out of tears to renewed faith in His promises.
We don’t know too much about heaven, but we do know what Revelation 21:4 says: “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
When we are reunited with our loved ones who believed in Jesus and followed Him as their Lord, we won’t have to face another loss of death’s separation.
We find reassurance in John 14:27 as Jesus assured us: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
Remember John 11:25-26 when you are experiencing loss: “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me will live, even though they die. Everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
