Suddenly, the light came on! And I got worried.
Gary and I were driving along enjoying our day, when the red engine light came on in our car.
I think about oil, or the lack of it, first, but nothing was smoking and the car wasn’t running hot.
Water? All OK.
So, Gary took the car to the shop to have them hook it up to the diagnostic computer to see what was going on.
Remember when your children were little and got sick? You couldn’t figure out what was going on and took them to the doctor. Suddenly, at the doctor’s office before seeing him, they were well!
Um hum. The car did the same thing. The car guys couldn’t find anything wrong. They were kind enough not to charge us for the diagnosis.
So, we went along — the car began to kind of stutter as it started and we knew there was something wrong with it. Turns out it could be a sensor or plug. So we called for a new appointment since the car was now showing symptoms. I really hope they find out the problem and get it fixed!
Maybe we need an engine light warning on our bodies? Or on our spiritual selves?
Something to alert us something is wrong?
God designed us to have physical signs when things aren’t right with us, we are getting sick or we need a doctor’s help to fix us up.
He also designed our spirits, hearts and souls. We have a warning sign that He gives us when we stray into sin or away from His will or begin to waver in our faith and steadfastness.
Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to the disciples and said He would come to teach, guide and illuminate Jesus and who He is, and convict of us of truth and sin, as well as come alongside us and help us.
What are some warning signs that can come on in our life?
A warning sign is a disinterest in the Word of God. Maybe you read the Bible occasionally but can take it or leave it.
A warning sign is a decrease in prayer and communication with God. You go through your day centered and wrapped up in worldly things — what’s going on around you in this temporary world. You don’t miss your time with God.
A warning sign can be an insensitivity to sin in your life. Instead of being convicted of sin, you feel comfortable in it. You don’t confess your sins as you pray.
A warning sign can be a lack of thankfulness to God, and a rising sense of pride and being self-sufficient.
A warning sign is you don’t miss church and being with God’s people. You don’t miss hearing Biblical preaching, praising in song and fellowshipping with Christians.
A warning sign can be living in the memory of your past sins and failures and feeling guilty and condemned instead of living in God’s peace and forgiveness for things you have repented of, confessed to and been forgiven of.
Gracious, God gives us lots more warning signs, and we are grateful He does.
We just need to keep alert and make sure we are in tune with God and His plan for us.
