Do you have any?
Helpers, that is.
Our four-year-old Addie Sue is a helper, just like her big sister was and continues to be an extra pair of hands when needed.
When she comes to see us, she helps me in the kitchen. With her butter knife, she gets the vegetables ready by cutting them up. Different sizes, but that’s fine. When I clean the floors, she likes to use the spray mop. Does she get a lot of cleaner some places and not so much others? Sure, but that’s OK. She’s learning.
She likes helping Gary, her Poppy, with chores around the place. Feeding chickens is high on her to-do list. She’s learned how to get in the feed shed, get the food, open the chicken pen gate, spread the feed out and close the gate again. She even gets the eggs and brings them in to me.
When her mama works teaching her online classes, Addie often sits near her and does her “work,” too. When playing, she mimics Jayme by “typing” on her computer and setting up her office on her little table.
Daniel encourages Addie Sue to help him on his projects, too. She paints with enthusiasm (herself included!). When he does woodworking, he shows her how to measure using the numbers on the measuring tape. He sent us a picture of her gently sanding a board the other day. She’s learning and enjoying it, too.
The job may take more time, the results may not be perfect, and maybe some spills and messes happen; but, all the trouble is worth it to let someone help and learn how to do things with you.
God, all-powerful, all- knowing and omnipotent, lets us help in His accomplishing His Will, too. He can do anything, but He invites to come and participate in His Work.
Isn’t that amazing? Knowing our limitations, He invites us to be a part of His family as His children. “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” (John 1:12) “For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.” (Galatians 3:26).
When Jesus began His ministry, He called the disciples to become His helpers. “When walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And He said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.’” (Matthew 4:18-20)
When Jesus ascended into heaven, He left us instructions of what He wanted us to keep doing: “Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the every end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18b-20)
During the Christmas Season, have you focused on doing God’s will? Are you mentoring younger Christians by patiently letting them help you in your work for God?
Coming as a baby, Jesus put himself in the hands of Mary and Joseph as a helpless newborn. When Jesus ascended to Heaven, He put the future of the Gospel in the hands of His disciples.
Are your helping hands trustworthy to continue the Gospel message and work until He returns?
