Emily Jo Wiggins was the welcomed guest speaker for the Feb. 14 meeting of the Charleston Magnolia Garden Club, which gathered at the First Presbyterian Church for its monthly session.
Ms. Wiggins is the Visitor Education Center director at the North Mississippi Fish Hatchery located near Enid Dam. She gave a splendid presentation with a PowerPoint of the native plants found at the hatchery.
The landscape, composed primarily of native plants, is in a continuous state of renewal and additions. The design was by Jackson landscape architect Robert Poore, who is famous for his native habitats and ecological designs.
Our theme for the garden club luncheon being focused on Valentine’s Day included pink hearts sprinkled on the tablecloth where all the members sat to listen to Ms. Wiggins. In the center of each table was an arrangement done by Carol Bullard, the Charleston president. She used colored florist wire bent into the glass vase to act as a frog for holding carnations, Bells of Ireland, green daisies and greenery of various kinds.
Our meeting afterward included as a preeminent focus: The Garden Show in April. It is a main attraction in our fair town. Besides, the luncheon we host each fall and this show garner awards and accolades for our club that bring us into the limelight at state shows.
The show will be held as usual at the First Presbyterian Church on April 25. You don’t want to miss it!
