Read Across America Day
In a world where technology seems to be taking over, it is important to remember the value of a good old-fashioned book. That’s why The Meek Foundation, Tallahatchie Early Learning Alliance (TELA), and the Tallahatchie County Library teamed up to hold a Read Across America Day event, promoting reading for pre-K and kindergarten students. And what better way to kick off this event than with the works of the legendary Dr. Seuss!
Senior students from Charleston High School volunteered to assist in book-based activities, providing a wonderful opportunity for intergenerational bonding and community engagement.
The reading event was held at the Tallahatchie County Library, a hub of knowledge and information that is often the starting point for many people’s lifelong love of reading. It was an ideal venue for promoting the benefits of reading, especially to young children who are just starting to explore the world of literature.
The featured books for the event were written by Dr. Seuss, a prolific writer who has captured the imaginations of generations of children. From “The Cat in the Hat” to “Green Eggs and Ham,” Dr. Seuss has a book for every child, and even adults who are young at heart. His stories are timeless and have a wonderful message of hope and optimism, making them the perfect choice for this event.
Crafts were also a part of the program, adding an element of fun to the day. Children had the opportunity to create their own Dr. Seuss-themed artwork, letting their imaginations run wild. This was not only a fun activity for children but also a way to help them remember the stories they read.
The event was not just about promoting reading but also about bringing together the community. Local high school students taking an interest in the younger generation is essential for building a strong and supportive community, one that values education and the power of reading. The Read Across America Day event was a fun-filled day for children, teachers and volunteers alike, and was a huge success.
The Meek Foundation, Tallahatchie Early Learning Alliance, and Tallahatchie County Library will continue with these events each month, where they will focus on Imagination Library’s book of the month.
