Rally for a Cure: Our motto is, “Cancer Never Sleeps.”
February was the month that the American Cancer Society recognized gallbladder/bile duct cancer. We pay tribute to those with this cancer by wearing a green ribbon. February was also National Cancer Prevention Month.
According to the American Cancer Society website, there will be an estimated 12,360 cases of gallbladder and bile duct cancers diagnosed this year, with a slightly higher occurrence in women. About 60% of diagnoses will be bile duct and 40% gallbladder.
Overview: Gallbladder cancer is an abnormal growth of cells that begins in the gallbladder. Your gallbladder is a small pear-shaped organ on the right side of your abdomen, just beneath your liver. The gallbladder stores bile, a digestive fluid produced by your liver.
Symptoms: Abdominal pain in the upper right portion of the abdomen, abdominal bloating, losing weight without trying, yellowing of the skin and of the whites of the eyes (jaundice).
It’s fundraising time for our organization. We’re asking our community to please join in and help in anyway you can. Cancer has touched so many of our families and friends. Our organization has helped a great many in our community with the help of our community donations. In order for us to continue with our missionary work, we must have your continued support.

A “Cure for Cancer Breakfast” will be held at Lillie Smith’s restaurant (Around the Table) at 811 E. Main St. in Charleston on Saturday, March 4. Pick up or dine in from 7 to 10:30 a.m. The cost per plate is $10. Local delivery is available for an extra $2.
Our Rally for a Cure is set for Saturday, April 15, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the National Guard armory in Charleston. We’re asking our community to donate cakes, pies, silent auction items, gift baskets, door prizes and monetary gifts. Your presence at the Rally will be gratefully appreciated.
We are selling Rally T-shirts for $20 each, which may be purchased from any board member. More updates will be given at a later date.
Word of encouragement: Living with and fighting cancer is about as close to walking through the valley of the shadow of death (Psalms 23:4) as any human experience. The physical toll of fighting cancer is obvious, even when one emerges victorious from the fight. The mental toll is equally taxing and is not talked about as often as the physical toll.
“Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord our God who goes with you. He will not leave or forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6)
