Suddenly I was sitting on the pier!
I’m not a very professional fisherman. But I do like to be on the water and see if any fish are biting! Our family enjoys walking down to the pond and spending some time lazily trying our luck. When we catch something, we usually put it back to grow some more since we only stocked the pond a short time ago. We have seen the fish in the low water we have in this drought, so we have faith there is something to catch!
My chair had a cloth bottom to sit on, and it had been in use for several years. The chair’s metal frame had some rust on it, but it had held me up before securely, so I didn’t hesitate to take a seat and begin throwing out my bait.
Suddenly, the red and white bobber went under the water and I got excited to have a bite on my line! I jumped a little and when I did “RIIIIIPPPPP”! Yep, the cloth seat tore across and dumped me unceremoniously on the hot wooden pier! My feet were sticking up and I was entangled in the folding chair, but I still had hold of my fishing pole.
Thank goodness Andrew was fishing with me and came to my rescue!
My chair had let me down!
Kind of a silly example, but in life we get let down by things we trust. Our car recently had a loud noise in the motor. Sure enough, even though we had been all over the country in this vehicle, it now needs a new engine. We couldn’t trust it any more to get us where we needed to go. Then we hit a doe in our new car, and the damages sent it to the shop waiting for parts, too. It couldn’t stand up against the deer that plowed into us and created havoc.
It didn’t matter that I had great faith, unshakeable faith, tremendous faith in the chair or the cars. My amount of faith didn’t make the chair trustworthy to hold me, or my long-term faith didn’t make the vehicles dependable to continue to run and keep us safely going along our way. I couldn’t totally depend on them.
The Bible tells us of the power of faith. Matthew 17:20-21 says, “For truly I tell you if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.”
Wow! Jesus said that! Have you seen how tiny a mustard seed is? Can we conceive the power of what He was saying!
My amount of faith was not the critical issue, but what I had my faith in was!
What do you put your faith in? Do you trust in Jesus Christ as the only Son of God to be your Savior and Lord?
“Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know my father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” (John 14:7-8)
Put your faith in Jesus alone!
