“I hear a sound. ...”
Addie and I were playing in her room. She loves Legos and blocks. Her other fascination is race cars, which she calls little metal cars. We had all kinds of her Legos and toys out and were building houses and cities.
She had paused, looked up, and stared at her ceiling light.
“I hear a sound,” she repeated.
“I think it may be the air conditioning you hear,” I replied.
Daniel had recently had to have a completely new air conditioning heating system put in, and it made some different sounds than the old one.
“Nooo,” she said, “my lights dirty!”
“There may a bug or two in it, but they’re dead,” I said. “We can clean it out.”
By the time we got in the living room for her to tell Poppy, she had figured out what was wrong with her light.
She got in Gary’s face and said, “It’s bees! My light! In my room! I heard a sound.”
Gary assured her he didn’t think she had bees in her room, and we decided to get Daniel to get the ladder and take the glass cover off the light to see what might be in it.
When Daniel took the light apart, he saw that only one of the three bulbs was working. He and Addie went to the kitchen and washed the glass cover, showing her there were no bees.
She was satisfied when he showed her and proved to her there were no bees to be found.
Replacing the burned out bulbs with new ones, putting the light back together, Daniel assured her all was well. No bees!
“Daddy fixed it!” she told me with a big, bright smile. “My light is OK! No bees!”
Addie inherited a stubborn streak, we think from my mother. She wants to have some things proven to her. She persists in her ideas until she is shown something different.
Adults aren’t so much different. We get stuck in our ideas and can stay there. Someone we trust has to show us different before we believe it.
We are told not to test the Lord, but we can prove Him.
Malachi 3:10 is about giving to God and tells us: “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.”
Giving back to God to support His church, missions, ministries, and work is part of our obedience to our Lord. We can trust God that He will bless us when we are obedient and faithful.
Like proving to Addie there were no bees by showing her, God will show us He is faithful when we act to obey Him!
