Suddenly, he heard, “tap, tap, tap” on the metal top of his paint can.
Gary was painting the wooden fence around the flower garden that he made for me in the front yard. Tedious, and seemingly unending, the task was taking more time than he thought it would. He had spent lots of hours near the flower bed and the bird feeders scattered in the trees.
Gary filled the feeders with bird seed, and especially plump sunflower seeds for the cardinals and robins.
The geese and ducks, being pretty smart birds, had figured out that the wild birds scattered seeds as they ate which fell on the ground. They loved to forage in the leaves for these overflow seeds!
The ducks had observed Gary bringing his can of bird seed to the feeders and carefully pouring seed in to fill the hanging feeders. Sometimes he would give them a handful of seeds scattered around.
Gary was painting away, and he noticed one of the larger ducks coming over to him, maybe curious about the activity, the ladders and cans.
The duck started quacking and bobbing and looking at Gary. Gary acknowledged the bird. But the duck kept trying to get his attention.
Then it dawned on him that the duck might be asking for more food. So, good master that he is, he went and gave the bird more food near the bird feeders.
Later, the next day, the duck came back to Gary’s painting area. Again, the fowl waited for Gary to see him. Gary was intent on getting the paint on the slats of the fence and busy. Then he heard it.
“Tap, tap, tap.”
He looked over and the duck was tapping with his hard, orange beak on the closed top of the paint can.
It was as if he was playing a tune for Gary to hear and come give him the most delicious sunflower seeds!
After laughing at the situation, Gary did as the duck asked, and gave lots of fresh seeds to them all.
God is ready to feed us spiritually if we will listen, ask and hear Him!
We need to “hunger and thirst for righteousness” (Matthew 5:6). If we don’t want to know God better, fellowship with Him more and become spiritually mature, we can start praying for that desire!
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” (John 14:26)
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” (Matthew 5:6)
Be like the duck, persistently and patiently asking God to fill you up!
