Having served in the House of Representatives for 43 years, I can tell you that we’ve never been faced with a “problem” like we were during the 2022 session — the “problem” of having significant extra funds to help our communities.
Thanks to the funds provided by the federal government, we were able to allocate monies from federal American Rescue Plan (ARP) funds to various needed projects across our districts. I worked to make sure our local communities were beneficiaries of this once-in-a-lifetime opp-ortunity.
As a result, the citizens of Charleston will receive $250,000 for repair and renovation of Charleston City Hall.
As you know, the building is a city landmark, having been a movie theater, which was later converted to house Charleston city government and its police headquarters. These funds will help preserve, restore and make needed improvements to the City Hall.
Charleston and Tallahatchie County can also take advantage of funds we set aside so that cities and counties can apply for needed water and sewer improvements. The truth is that with modern technology and understanding of water/sewer issues, our city and county leaders can put this money to use in important, innovative ways that should improve health concerns as well as maintenance.
I am encouraged at the sense of excitement and positivity in our state. We finally, I believe, are on the downslope of the pandemic era, and folks have had a chance to think about what they want for their communities. They want safe, functioning public places. And they want to enjoy being with their fellow citizens in community activities and festivals.
Mississippi has so much to offer, and I am grateful I have had the chance to help bring improvements.
Each of us in the Legislature is charged with doing what is best for the state of Mississippi, and that does include making sure our local citizens can see their tax investments at work for them.
