OAKLAND — Join the Oakland Area Chamber of Commerce from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, at the chamber’s offices at 304 Holly Street as all elected officials representing the communities and Yalobusha County are recognized. The event is open to the public.
“I have had the opportunity over my career to work with many elected officials. I know the sacrifices many of them make in order to serve. While many of these positions are called part time, public servants, both elected and non-elected, often are contacted 24/7 by constituents,” said Chamber Director Linda Ross Aldy. “Recognizing their service and saying this is appreciated is important.”
The chamber will especially recognize Oakland Mayor James Riley Swearengen, who has served the town for more than 40 years as either a member of the Board of Alderman (five years) or as its mayor. Friends, family and colleagues are welcome.
Swearengen is a lifelong native of Oakland and attended Walker High School in Oakland. He also attended Arkansas State University to receive a Certification in Public Administration. In addition to his public service, the mayor was employed for 45 years with McQuay/Luvata/ Modine until his retirement in 2017.
