Fishing for physically challenged set
On Sept. 7, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and volunteers will host the 31st annual fishing event for the physically challenged at the Bob Tyler Fish Hatchery at Enid Lake.
Event volunteers and sponsors make this day of fishing and fun possible for those who don’t ordinarily have the opportunity to experience the outdoors.
The day will start at 8 a.m. by registering participants. Fishing will take place until 12 noon, when a fish fry lunch will be provided.
Volunteers from the Chickasaw Hill community are assisting Enid Lake personnel in organizing the event.

Local church hosts shoebox event
The Samaritan’s Purse project, Operation Christmas Child, will be conducting a workshop starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at Charleston First Methodist Church.
It will be a time of fun, fellowship and learning including refreshments, door prizes and shoebox giveaways with new resources.
Anyone interested in learning more about Operation Christmas Child, or who already packs shoebox donations of toys, school supplies and hygiene items for children in need around the world, is invited to attend.

Persimmon Hill to honor pastor
Persimmon Hill Missionary Baptist Church of Enid will conduct their appreciation services for pastor Andrew Fluker on Sunday, Sept. 8. Rev. Riley Suggs of Jones Chapel Church of Grenada will be the speaker at the 11:30 a.m. service, while Rev. Mark Davis of the Oak Grove Church of Nesbit will speak during the 2:30 p.m. service. All are invited.
Mt. Zion plans homecoming event
Mt. Zion Church will have their annual homecoming program on Sunday, Sept. 8, beginning at 2 p.m. The Rev. John Frieson will be the guest speaker. Everyone is invited, said Mt. Zion pastor Randy Mangrum.
Union Grove to honor pastor, wife
On Sunday, Sept. 8, at 2 p.m., Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church, located at 3460 Highway 35 S. Holcomb, will honor pastor Carl Ray and Sister Dorothy Ray with an appreciation program recognizing their eight years of service to the church. Guest speaker will be Cornelius Conley, pastor of St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church in Charleston.

Hitts Chapel, located at 3266 Highway 32 in Webb, will host special services for “Willing Women Month” during September.

“Pop in” to the Charleston Library Thursday, Sept. 12, beginning at 9 a.m. to enjoy popcorn, juice and other special giveaways and learn more about the numerous resources that the library has to offer. All are invited.

CARE offers food, prizes, bingo
CARE will host a night of food, prizes and bingo beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13. There is no charge for this fun night, but those who attend are asked to bring a “white elephant” gift. (No need to buy anything; just bring something that you already have.) Snacks will be provided. If you arrive after 5:30, you can join the next game.

The ladies of the Paducah Wells Church of God of Prophecy will host their annual ladies’ day luncheon on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.
The theme of the luncheon is “Hope and Grace in Adversity.” Guest speakers are Mrs. Charlotte Lavender Hargett and Mrs. Vicky Winters Sherman. Mrs. Beverly Smith Taylor will be bringing the music and singing.

The Chick-fil-A food truck will park in front of the CARE Arts Center in Charleston from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 30, to enable community members to purchase food. Only credit cards and debit cards are accepted. A portion of all sales goes to CARE to provide programs for the community.

Gateway to the Delta Festival on tap
The annual Gateway to the Delta Festival will be held Saturday, Oct. 12, beginning at 10 a.m., around the Court Square in Charleston.
The all-day event will feature a fun run/walk, live musical entertainment, arts and crafts, children’s games and activities, a car show, children’s pageants, food trucks and more. Admission is free.

Free produce offered in Charleston
The Sisters with Love Ministry at Bertha’s Day Care, located at 184 Gay St. in Charleston, is distributing boxes of fresh fruits and vegetables each Thursday for 12 weeks. The first distribution was Thursday, June 13.
Distributions are from 1-4 p.m., and only 50 boxes are available each week from the Mississippi Delta Farm Workers of Clarksdale.

Out-of-school youth being sought
Mid-State Opportunity Inc. MySTATUS Youth Opportunity Program is currently recruiting out-of-school youth ages 16-24, having a high school diploma or equivalent, to participate in the program.
The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Out-of-School Youth MySTATUS program is funded by The Delta Workforce Development Area through South Delta Planning and Development District.
The program offers youth ages 16-24 in Panola, Quitman, Tallahatchie and Tunica counties a training and employment program.
Participants are paid $6 hourly for training and $10 hourly for work experience. Cash incentives are awarded to youth who obtain accredited certificates and credentials.
Auxiliary aids and services are available upon request to persons with disabilities.
