CHARLESTON — Ernestine Slaughter, age 86, passed away Wednesday, September 30, at Tallahatchie General’s Extended Care Facility.
Visitation will be held 10-11 a.m. Saturday, October 10, at Womble Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. with Bro. John Price and Bro. Joe May officiating. Interment will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery where Mrs. Jeanette Coffee will sing a special selection.
Ernestine was born on January 2, 1940, in Oakland to the late Rena Woodall Slaughter and J.E. “Kirb” Slaughter. She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Charleston, where her faith and service to God were central to her life.
Ernestine was a hairdresser for more than 40 years and took great pride in serving the people of her community. She also shared her love of cooking and hospitality through Spring Hill Catering, which she operated with her sister, Peggy Slaughter.
Her dedication to her church was evident through her many years of service in several ministries. She taught young children in Sunday school, served as music director, and faithfully served as church hostess. Her love for children, music, cooking, and her church family touched countless lives.
Ernestine will be lovingly remembered for her wonderful cooking, her care for numerous pets throughout the years, and the love she so generously shared with her family and friends. Above all, she will be remembered for her unwavering devotion to her church and to God.
She is survived by her sister, Peggy Slaughter of Oakland; nieces and nephews, Betty (Brad) Kornegay, Susan (Harrison) Ford, Marybeth (Jimmy) Dunn, John (Torri) Slaughter, and Allen (Beppie) Adams; and great-nieces and great-nephews, Anna Lauren Kornegay, Mark Kornegay, Maura Dunn, Meghan Dunn, Mary Devitt (Jeff) Seitz, Jack Dunn, Caroline Ford, Natalie Ford, Emily Ford, Sam Ford, and Brynnley Slaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rena Woodall Slaughter and J.E. “Kirb” Slaughter; her sister, Sally Adams; and her brother, J.W. Slaughter.
Serving as pallbearers are Billy Ray Adams, Roy Shook, Blaine Breland, Gordan Stanford, Jimmy Dunn and Earl “Willie” Bland.
Ernestine will be remembered for her wonderful cooking, came for numerous pets over the years, loving her family and friends, and most importantly her devotion to church and God.
