Jody Wine, left, and Mikki Camp, employees of The Flower Basket in Charleston, walked in the heat on Tuesday, the official start of summer, to pass out almost three-dozen mini bouquets of flowers to individuals and businesses around Court Square. It was all part of an early observance of “Petal it Forward,” a nationwide campaign during which florists get together and spread joy and happiness by giving away flowers. The observance usually falls in October, but the owner and staff of the local flower and gift shop decided there was no better time to spread some floral cheer than on the first day of what is shaping up to be a very hot summer.
