JACKSON – Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) crews continue to monitor highways and bridges as temperatures are expected to drop below freezing across much of the state Monday night.
Overnight, residual moisture may refreeze on some roadways. Motorists should remain cautious, especially on bridges and overpasses. Shaded areas and roadways with overhanging trees may also refreeze.
Motorists are advised to check local reports and MDOTtraffic.com for the most up-to-date information. They should avoid areas where icy conditions have been reported.
MDOT crews will continue monitoring road conditions throughout the night and will place salt and slag on affected roads and bridges so they remain passable as long as possible.
To assist the traveling public in preparing for potential winter weather conditions, MDOT offers these safe driving tips.
• Remember, ice will form on bridges and overpasses quicker than the road.
• Remain cautious in areas with overhanging trees and other shady areas where moisture can accumulate and refreeze.
• Slow down; should winter weather conditions become present, black ice can form.
• Allow more space between the vehicles around you.
• Brake early and gently to avoid skidding, and never slam on the brakes.
• Avoid distractions, such as talking or texting on a cell phone.
• Stay alert.
