As we commemorate the 250th birthday, or anniversary, of the United States on Saturday, July 4, we find ourselves at a remarkable milestone in human history.
A full 250 years ago, a group of visionaries boldly declared that a nation could be built on the premise of liberty, equality and government by the consent of the governed.
Thomas Jefferson, primary author of the nation’s Declaration of Independence, wrote that our republic offers “precious blessings ... which no other people on earth enjoy.” That was true in 1776, and it continues to be true in 2026.
The United States remains an unparalleled experiment in freedom, self-government and the rule of law.
Like any human endeavor, our Union is not without its flaws. Throughout our two-and-a-half centuries, we have faced profound challenges, deep divisions and moments of intense political discord.
Yet, the defining characteristic of the American story is our persistent drive to continually form a “more perfect Union” — generation after generation working tirelessly to expand the blessings of liberty and to build a country worthy of our foundational promises.
The true strength of America does not lie solely in our institutions, but in the grit, innovation and resilience of our people.
We are a nation of communities, neighborhoods and families who come together to support one another, pursue the American Dream and ensure that ability matters more than ancestry.
As we mark this historic Semiquincentennial, we are called to look back with gratitude and look forward with hope.
We can celebrate our achievements while still striving to mend our remaining flaws.
We can argue passionately for our beliefs, just as the nation’s founders did, while ultimately seeking common ground and remembering that we are all fellow Americans.
Let us celebrate our shared heritage, our triumphs and the remarkable journey of the last 250 years.
In doing so, let us recommit to the ideals of liberty so eloquently stated in the Declaration of Independence, ensuring that America continues to be a beacon of opportunity and freedom for generations to come.
Happy Birthday, America!
