CHARLESTON — Jesse Winters, a much-loved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle, gained his ultimate heavenly reward Sunday, June 21, surrounded by his family. He was born on March 23, 1931, and lived near the Charleston and Cascilla communities all his life.
Visitation will be at Adams Arbor Church near Charleston at 11 a.m. Friday, June 26, followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m., officiated by his nephew Pastor Tim Winters. Interment will follow in the Adams Arbor cemetery.
He was given the nickname, Nootsie, by his father. Most of the family and many friends called him Nootsie. His favorite “title” though was Papaw. That began with Amanda, his only granddaughter, who he affectionately called “Baby” the rest of his life. His face always lit up when she or any of his great-granddaughters came to visit.
He was a faithful member of Turkey Foot Fork Church of God of Prophecy all of his adult life and served as deacon for more than 50 years.
He worked as a painting contractor more than 30 years for the same customers who were more like friends. He actually had keys to many of their houses. They would call and ask him to paint their house while they were on vacation. They trusted him that much. He treasured those memories and talked about them often.
Jesse loved the outdoors. He spent a lifetime hunting and fishing with family and friends. His favorite memories, which he loved to talk about, included squirrel hunting with his brother-in-law Ray, bass fishing trips to Mexico with the Finke’s, and close to 70 years of hunting and fishing with his son Darrell. He deeply cherished his childhood, growing up with his parents, brothers, sisters, and their families. He loved to tell of the many stunts and tricks that took place at Papa’s and Big Mama’s house on the Simpson place.
He is survived by his wife of 77 years, Amy Winters; son Darrell Winters and wife Mary; granddaughter, Amanda Grisson and husband Joseph; great-granddaughters, Savannah (and husband Wes), Sarah, Shelbe and Sadie; many nephews, nieces, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Winter Summer “Papa or Doc” Winters; mother, Betty Lou Coleman “Mama” or “Big Mama” Winters; brothers, James (and wife Delorice), Edwin (and wife Farrist), Louie (and wife Geneva), and Henry “Petie” (and wife Maurine); sisters, Dovie (and husband Lud) and Margie (and husband Ray).
Pallbearers are Roger Winters, TerryWinters, Chris Sherman, Phillip Sherman, Joseph Grissom and Wes Mott.
