CHARLESTON — Edward Earl Shook, age 95, passed away Sunday, Feb.18, at his home.
Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 23, at Paynes Baptist Church.
Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. Friday, February 23, 2024, at Paynes Baptist Church with Bro. Gerald Shook conducting. Interment will be at Magnolia Gardens in the Paynes community. Womble Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Born on January 21, 1929, he was the son of the late Noah Clifton Shook and Robbie Bell Shook.
Edward grew up on the “Meriweather Place” in Paynes and graduated from Paynes High School. Following a few years of secondary education, he joined the Navy Reserve where he served as Chief Clerk and Security Officer from 1946-1954. Upon his return home, Edward married his sweetheart, Johnnie Mae Holland, on December 28, 1951. He later enlisted in the Air Force, where he served from 1951-1954. He was stationed at Shepard Air Force Station Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. During his service in the Air Force, Edward worked in Personnel Services and served as a math and typing instructor. In 1954, the couple moved back home to Paynes where Edward farmed cotton and soybeans and raised hogs and cattle until his retirement.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents, Robbie and Noah Shook; his wife of 64 years, Johnnie Mae Holland Shook; daughter, Debbie Shook Starnes; grandson, Joshua Michael Melton; sister, Sara Jane Shook; and brother, Jamie W. Shook.
He is survived by a daughter, Sheila Melton (Mike); son-in-law, Gregg Starnes; three grandchildren, Nathan Little (Jan), Leah Hollingsworth (Jeff) and Ciji Sanders (Randy), grandchild-in-law, Maria Melton; and nine great-grandchildren, Blaine, Ashlynn, Hallie, Zach, Nolan, Sadie, Jackson, Caleb, and Ethan.
Pallbearers are Jeff Hollingsworth, Nolan Hollingsworth, Nathan Little, Blaine Sanders, Randy Sanders and Zach Sanders.
