CHARLESTON — James William Turman, (J.W.), age 95, passed away surrounded by his loved ones Monday, Aug. 19, at UMMC in Grenada.
Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, at the Charleston United Methodist Church. The service will follow 11 a.m. with Dr. Ray Branch officiating. Interment will follow at Charleston Cemetery. Womble Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Born in Paynes on March 15, 1929, he was the son of the late Dave Porter Turman, Sr. and Annie (Topsy) Williams.
J.W. served in the Army during the Korean War, and later became the Chancery Clerk of Tallahatchie County for 12 years. Afterwards he worked for Tallahatchie County Bank until retirement.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Dorothy “Dot” Turman; a daughter, Deborah Ray-Roberts (Ward) of Grenada; four grandchildren, Connie Stammerjohan (Will), Anna Turman, Darby Turman and Hannah Ray; and six great-grandchildren, William Stammerjohan, Anthony Stammerjohan, Daniel Stammerjohan, Caila Milton, Olivia Plumlee and Nova Jane Stokes.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Danny Earl Turman; sister, Annie Wills McNulty; and two brothers, Dave Porter Turman, Jr., and Albert Turman.
Pallbearers are Tim Milton, Will Stammerjohan, Darby Turman, Randy Turman, Jim Lewis and Jimmy Fly.
