The West Tallahatchie High School (WTHS) Alumni Class of 1973 has announced two students, Nicholas A. Williams and Myiesha R. Wright, as recipients of the 2023-24 West Tallahatchie High School Class of 1973, Dr. Jessie L. McMullen Memorial Scholarship.
Both honorees are 2024 graduates of the school.
Dr. William L. Booker, representing the WTHS Class of 1973, presented Lewis and Williams, the fourth annual Dr. Jessie L. McMullen Memorial Scholarship during the West Tallahatchie senior banquet on May 19.
Williams is the son of Yolanda Williams of Philipp.
He was the WTHS senior class president.
His favorite subjects are science and history.
Williams is a strong academic student who at the time of this writing held a 3.34 GPA. He was dually enrolled at Coahoma Community College and as a participant in the Upward Bound II Program sponsored by Mississippi Valley State University.
His organizational memberships include the National Beta Club and the National Society of High School Scholars (NJHS).
He is employed as an observer/ assistant at the Cassidy Bayou Clinic in Sumner and an active volunteer for Habitat for Humanity.
Nicholas is presently in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree at Mississippi State University, Starkville, with a major concentration in Medicine/ Nursing. He has the future goal of becoming a family nurse practitioner.
Miss Wright is the daughter of Jerry Wright and Patricia Ann Triplett of Sumner.
She reigns as Miss West Tallahatchie High School for the 2023-24 academic year.
She is driven academically, and her favorite subject is science. She received West Tallahatchie’s highest GPA from 2020-2024.
Miss Wright’s organizational memberships include the National Beta Club, where she served as president for three consecutive years; Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), of which she was president for two consecutive years and won first place in business law at the FBLA district competition two years in a row and then competed in the statewide competition and won an impressive second place; Jobs for Mississippi Graduates, where she served as president (2022-23) and secretary (2021-22). She also volunteered with the Emmett Till Curriculum Project, participated in the Sunflower Film Academy, Habitat for Humanity, Pearls of Excellence and led school-wide efforts to provide natural disaster relief to schools in Rolling Fork.
Miss Wright works as an activist for the BE YOU Organization, a teen drug and tobacco prevention program. She has represented the mighty West Tallahatchie Choctaws in varsity volleyball, track and cheer.
She is presently in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree at Alcorn State University, Lorman, with a major concentration in agriculture and a future goal of a obtaining a doctorate in veterinary medicine.
The WTHS Alumni Class of 1973 has a united vision to empower others to achieve, and to aid in providing effective means to promote quality education, empowerment, social justice and create opportunities for students in their quest of exemplary future endeavors.
They will continue to award annual scholarships to two WTHS graduating seniors through a stringent application process.
