Work has been underway for several years, first to stabilize and now to restore, the long-vacant Rowlands building on Main Street in Charleston.
The 8,000-square-foot, multi-floor building, thought to be over 100 years old, was owned by the Rowland family from the 1940s through the 1960s. There, Rowland Hardware Store offered one-stop shopping for everything from Lenox crystal to horse feed and shotguns.
What to do with the space is the big question of the present owners.
To help them decide, they are opening the doors of the historic building to the public on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., during the Gateway to the Delta Festival on the square.
The public is invited to stop by, take a look and offer suggestions for the building, which holds memories for many people in Tallahatchie County.
