SUMNER — On Saturday, April 9, the Mississippi Sickle Cell Foundation collaborated with the Emmett Till Multi-Purpose Complex and the Emmett Till Intrepid Center to host the first Run/Walkathon and Health Fair to raise awareness on sickle cell disease.
Local and neighboring businesses, churches and community members joined hands to give their time and financial support to make this event a success and build a healthier community.
The Mississippi Sickle Cell Foundation (MSCF) and the Mississippi Department of Health’s Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs program provided educational literature about sickle cell disease to all who attended.
Additionally, Mrs. Jeanne J. Tate, chairwoman of MSCF, shared with the group what sickle cell is, how sickle cell impacts the lives of individuals living with it and services that the foundation provides.
A thank you goes to the Delta Health-Northwest Regional hospital in Clarksdale and their representative, Mrs. Diane Mitchell, for their sponsorship. They provided information about the health care providers and services available to the community.
Also, a thank you goes out to Coahoma Community College coaches, faculty and students; Kenneth Jones of the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility; and Tallahatchie County Sheriff Jimmy Fly.
Mrs. Chandra German-Flowers, interim executive director of the Tutwiler Community Education Center, provided the community with literature about COVID-19.
We would like to thank each of the runners and walkers for their participation and we are already looking forward to next year.
We also thank everyone who made a donation. Whether it was a monetary donation or an in-kind donation, it was greatly appreciated.
