WINONA — The Montgomery County Arts Council has been awarded a $3,750 grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission.
This grant is a portion of the more than $1.4 million in grants MAC awarded in fiscal year 2022 and will be used to fund Hill Fire, a folk life play.
This season’s production of Hill Fire will be based on stories from the Mississippi Delta, including the communities of Tutwiler and Sumner. The stories will include those of Dr. Anne Brooks, Sister Maurine Delaney, Mary Sue Robertson, the Brett family and others.
This will be the 18th play since the inception of Hill Fire in 2003.
Its goal is to collect and preserve Southern stories and traditions.
Show dates for the play, which is yet untitled, will be Oct. 2, 3, 7 and 9 this fall and March 5, 6 and 7 in 2022 at the Performing Arts Center, 208 Summit St. in Winona.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students 18 and under and will be available at the door.
MAC grants are made possible by continued funding from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
“The state’s arts community has displayed such resiliency during tumultuous times, and we are very pleased to provide support to these worthy organizations,” said Sarah Story, executive director of MAC.
“These funds will help organizations recover from the past year and build upon their successes for future arts-based programming,” Story continued. “MAC awards annual grants to individuals and organizations in nearly every area of the state, helping broaden the reach of arts to serve the state’s diverse population.”
