The Scholarship Committee of the National Charleston Day Organization announces the recipients of this year’s scholarships.
Akeira Goodwin has been selected to receive the Dr. Ethel Johnson Greene Educational Award in the amount of $1,500. Akeira, a 2025 graduate of Charleston High School, has applied and been accepted to the University of Mississippi, Oxford, where she plans to pursue a degree in pre-law. Her further goals are to become an advocate lawyer and return to her community to help build a stronger, more informed legal setting for residents.
Ira Jackson III is the selected recipient of the Luannie Taylor Pitts Educational Scholarship in the amount of $,1000. Mr. Jackson has completed his first year at University of Mississippi, Oxford, where he pursues a degree in Law Studies. He plans to further his education by attending law school with a goal of making an impact on the world by becoming a civil lawyer.
The family of Mrs. Glennie Houston request the awarding of two scholarships this year.
The first Houston scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, is offered to Jasmine Tellis, who has received this scholarship for the past two years. Miss Tellis will be in her third year at Mississippi State University this fall where she is in pursuit of a degree in Biomedical Science, then med school, where she plans to become an MD.
The second Houston award in the amount of $1,000 is offered to Tykeria Davis, a 2025 graduate of Charleston High School. Miss Davis has applied to and been accepted to University of Mississippi, Oxford, where she plans to pursue a degree in Pre-Health Biological Science with a future goal of becoming a medical entrepreneur.
The David and Mildred Alford Memorial Scholarships will also be offered to two students.
Miss Janiya Taylor has been selected to receive a $500 Alford award. She is a 2024 graduate of Charleston High School and has completed her first year at Northwest Community College, where she has chosen Social Work as her field. She will be attending the University of Mississippi, Oxford, during the fall of 2025, where her goal is to complete a degree and advocate for more collective strength in her community.
The second Alford scholarship in the amount of $500 is being offered to Miss Makynze Washington. Miss Washington is a 2025 graduate of Charleston High School. She has applied to and been accepted to Holmes Community College, where her intended area of study will be Sports Management. Her future career endeavor is to become an athletic trainer.
The executive officers, the Scholarship Committee and members of all chapters of the National Charleston Day Organization want to congratulate these students and wish them continued success in their educational and career pursuits.
