The National Charleston Day Organization Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce its awardees for the 2026-2027 academic year.
They are:
» Lemar Frost, a 2026 graduate of Charleston High School, is recipient of the Dr. Ethel Johnson-Greene Educational Award. This award honors the organization’s founder and is presented annually to a qualified CHS student. Lemar plans to attend Mississippi Valley State University to major in Mass Communications.
» Shyerra Truly, a 2026 CHS graduate, is recipient of the LuAnnie Pitts Taylor Educational Award, established in honor of the organization’s second National President. Shyerra will attend Northwest Community College to pursue a career in pre-Nursing.
» Jada Leavy, a 2026 CHS graduate, is a recipient of the David and Mildred Alford Memorial Scholarship, established by the Alford family to honor their parents, who were educators in the East Tallahatchie School District. Jada plans to major in pre-nursing at Coahoma Community College.
» Payton Adkins, a 2026 CHS graduate, is a recipient of the David and Mildred Alford Memorial Scholarship. Payton plans to pursue a career in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
» Nakiya Cashaw, a 2026 CHS graduate, is a recipient of the Glennie M. Houston Scholarship, established to honor Mrs. Houston’s commitment to educational opportunities in Charleston. Nakiya will attend Jackson State University to major in Criminal Justice.
» Tykeria Davis, a 2025 CHS graduate, is now a two-time recipient of the Glennie M. Houston Scholarship. Tykeria has completed her freshman year at the University of Mississippi, where she is studying nursing. The Houston family has committed to supporting her until completion of her studies.
» Jasmine Tellis, a 2023 CHS graduate, is a recipient of the Glennie M. Houston Scholarship for the fourth consecutive year. Jasmine is pursuing a Pre-Med degree at Mississippi State University and is scheduled to graduate in spring 2027.
The officers, members and scholarship committee of the National Charleston Day Organization commend these students for their unwavering commitment to their education and thank and support every student who has exerted the effort to pursue resources for their future on behalf of the organization and the community.
