Editor, Sun-Sentinel:
The National Charleston Day Organization (NCDO), under the leadership of national president Tom Willis, sponsored a turkey and coat giveaway in the Charleston Day Club Center on Nov. 17.
This is a note of thanks to the giving and serving spirit of everyone who made any contribution to making this effort possible.
We had the help of far too many people to name everyone individually, but we are grateful to president Bennie Paige and the Charleston chapter members for all of their help. Ms. Edith Bellamy and Fannie B. Morgan, with the help of many others, prepared and served food to the estimated 150 people who were in attendance.
Thank you, Gwen Dailey and Zelma Cosby, for reminding us of small details that were important.
The total cost of the effort was about $2,000, and there were donations from the NCDO chapters in Atlanta, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit and Memphis, and personal donations from Liz Scurlock-Miles and Willie Smith of Compton and Sylmar, California.
President Charlene Hall, Shirley Ann Batteast, Carolyn Faye Cooper and Barbara Ann Holmes, of the Atlanta chapter, brought more than 100 coats to be given away!
The crowd was blessed with the presence of Mayor Sedrick Smith, who passed out turkeys and made a personal donation.
Mayor Smith, James Johnson and Jimmie Johnson made monetary donations so that, in addition to winning a turkey, seven people also received $50 or $25 in cash!
Many thanks to everyone that we mentioned and those that we didn’t have the space to mention by name, too.
It just goes to show that, with the unity of many people making small sacrifices, anything is possible!
