Charleston’s animal shelter is a testament to what can be achieved when we work together.
The new dog pound construction and operation is due to the combined resources of the Charleston Rotary Club, Tallahatchie County and the City of Charleston.
The construction of the pound was funded by the Charleston Rotary Club. County employee Steve Simmons oversaw the construction of the shelter.
The city has assumed the responsibility of capturing dogs, providing their food and organizing, scheduling and directing volunteers to feed the dogs and clean the shelter on weekends. The county has volunteered trusties to feed the dogs and clean their pens during the week.
If a dog that is caught has a collar/identification, two calls and a letter will be sent to the dog’s owner during the following 10 days. If a response is not received during this period. the dog will be transported to the Jackson animal shelter for possible adoption or euthanasia, if adoption attempts are unsuccessful.
Dogs without a collar/ identification will only be held for five days at the Charleston shelter prior to being transported to Jackson.
The Charleston Rotary Club, the City of Charleston and Tallahatchie County are very pleased to provide this greatly needed service to our community.
