SHARKEY ROAD — Saturday, June 29, members of the Sharkey Road community held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to introduce its first Little FREE Library (LFL).
R.B. Hill offered space on his property to install the LFL. After selecting their own books, kids were invited to play and Mr. Hill shared plans for beautifying the space to invite passersby to visit the library.
Family and friends at the 14th annual Harris family picnic learned of the LFL and were invited to pick free books. Family members shared memories of community leaders that encouraged them to read, learn technology, and inspired their education.
Wanda Harris hosted story time and the kids enjoyed The Twits by Roald Dahl while creating a craft.
The community is encouraged to host story times, or reading events, to invite visitors of all ages to the library box.
The Harris family hopes to spark a book-sharing movement for Sharkey Road and surrounding communities by encouraging partnerships to build and install library boxes throughout the community.
Anyone with an idea for a location or can donate supplies or labor to build a library box is asked to email wandakaneharris@gmail.com or call Ella Harris at 662-457-0685.
The community is invited to stop by to pick up a book for summer reading or drop off a book to share.
The library is located near the Sharkey Road fire station off Sharkey Road and Horton Road.

The library allows anyone to take a book and leave a book so they can get something new to read and share books that they love with their neighbors. (Photo special to The Sun-Sentinel)
