TUTWILER — The U.S. Highway 49 bridge over Hopson Bayou in Tutwiler is designated for replacement using federal Competitive Highway Bridge Program funds.
The Tutwiler crossing is one of four bridges rated in poor condition — others are in Yalobusha and Attala counties — to be replaced through a U.S. Department of Transportation CHBP grant totaling $10.139 million, U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson announced Aug. 29. The funds are being awarded to the Mississippi Department of Transportation, which will oversee the bundled highway bridge projects.
In Yalobusha, the funds will finance the replacement of the Mississippi Highway 7 bridge over Cypress Creek near Coffeeville.
Thompson said the planned work “will improve the overall condition of the transportation infrastructure and maintain access to life services for residents,” and also, he noted, “benefit the region’s economic activities by improving access to rural Mississippi.”
