Plans are underway for the 10th annual celebration of the Birdia Keglar Legacy, and two days of educational and encouraging community activities — on Saturday, May 30, and Sunday, May 31 — have been prepared.
Saturday features a commemorative opening ceremony on the west side of Charleston’s courthouse lawn. Beginning at 10 a.m., there will be an invocation, greetings from city and county officials, entertainment from local youth and remarks from an invited guest of honor. After the opening phase of the event, a cavalcade will proceed from the courthouse to Charleston Industrial Park, where activities for all age groups will take place.
Musical renditions, entertainment and games, and speeches by candidates whose names will appear on the ballot for this year’s election have all been designed to inform and ignite community activism in Mrs. Keglar’s honor. Voter education and registration opportunities will be available. Information booths from individuals, churches and community organizations will also be available.
On Sunday, the annual Birdia Keglar Legacy Scholarship and the Birdia Keglar Legacy awards program will be held at New Town Missionary Baptist Church at 2:30 p.m.
All are asked to join in paying tribute to this icon of human rights in the area. Organizers thank those who have supported efforts in continuing this legacy, for the children’s future depends on it.
Scholarship applications have been distributed throughout the community. If there are interested young women who attend or have attended Charleston High School (CHS), are currently in good standing with an accredited institution of higher learning and are interested in completing the application, they may do so by contacting LaJoyce Stewart at 662-417-4950. The application deadline is May 1. The recipient of the Birdia Keglar Scholarship will be announced at CHS graduation and presented to the recipient at the awards ceremony on May 31.
All local and statewide candidates are invited to contact organizers to let them know that they will join in this event. Each candidate is encouraged to distribute information, place signs on the park lawn, mingle with the crowd and share their platform.
