CHARLESTON — Loys Elwanda Morman Brewer, 93, died Wednesday, March 9.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Saturday, March 12, at Spring Hill Baptist Church with interment following in Brewer Family Cemetery near Oakland. Womble Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Elwanda was born to Tommie Jesse and Ida Mae Hemphill Morman, on March 20, 1922, near Gore Springs. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Lewis Brewer on March 1, 2015, a younger brother, Binford, and younger sister, Jessie Mae.
After completing high school at Gore Springs, she graduated from Wood Junior College, obtained a BS from the University of Southern Mississippi and Master of Education from Mississippi State, and held an AAA certificate in Home Economics Education from the University of Mississippi.
She taught for 46 years in schools at Gore Springs, Cascilla, Mehan Junction, Longview, Holcomb, Boyle, Oakland and Charleston. In her early years of teaching, she coached girls’ basketball. She served as Tallahatchie County Adult Basic Education Director. In 1976, she was honored as Home Economics Teacher of the Year for the state of Mississippi.
She has been a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church for 61 years, where she helped begin the Women’s Missionary Society. She served as president for over 17 years. For over 45 years, she was the church clerk. During the summer in the late 60s and early 70s, she helped Baptist churches across Tallahatchie County organize Vacation Bible Schools.
She is survived by her daughter, Ramona Brewer Adams (Billy Ray) and son, William L. Brewer, Jr. (Tori). Cherishing memories of time with Grandma are granddaughters: Rebecca, Jessie and Breck. Also, surviving her are younger sisters, Pat of Kentucky, and Eloise of Oxford, as well as cousins, nieces, and nephews.
