GULFPORT — Martha Johnson Dowdle, 99, passed away on Sunday, June 21, in Gulfport.
She was born on April 17, 1921, to the late Glynn and Lorene Watts Johnson in Kilmichael.
After graduating from Delta State Teachers College, Martha was an elementary school teacher for 30 years, most of which were in Charleston. She taught children’s Sunday School for many years at First Baptist Church of Charleston.
Along with her parents, Martha is preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, James L. Dowdle; her brothers, Julius Johnson and James Merit Johnson; her son, Donald L. Dowdle; and her son-in-law, Rev. Jim Fisher.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Madge D. Fisher and Glynn J. (Brenda) Dowdle; grandchildren, Laura Anne (Bryan) Marshall, Will Fisher, Lindey Jones, Allison Dowdle, Maegan (Chase) Manning, Britain Lenz, and Meredith Dowdle; and 6 great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
The funeral service for Martha will be held on Thursday, June 25, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Winona, beginning at 2 p.m. with Rev. Joe May officiating. Interment will immediately follow in Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery.
