CHARLESTON — Martha Mounce Morgan, age 86, of Charleston, passed away peacefully to her heavenly home on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private visitation was held for immediate family at Newsom Funeral Home Chapel. A graveside funeral service was held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, at the Charleston City Cemetery.
She was born Sept. 6, 1934, in Tallahatchie County, to the late Willis and Freda Hall Mounce.
Martha was preceded in her death by her husband, Thomas Earl Morgan in 1974.
Martha was blessed by a large and loving family. She is survived by four daughters, Teresa Newsom (Jody) of Charleston, Jeanne Monday (Joe) of Oakland, Debra Morgan of Charleston and Diana Shute of Long Beach; four grandchildren, Morgan Newsom (Gretchen) of Charleston, Cassidy Todd (Ricky) of Southaven, Chase Savage of Annapolis, Md., Thomas Lewis of Charleston; and 3 great-grandchildren, Gabby Clolinger, Carol Anna Todd and Brooks Todd. She also survived by her brother, Henry Mounce (Barbara) of Paynes; her sister, Fran Whitely (Ken) of Colleyville, Texas; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Willis V. Mounce, Jr.
Martha was a beloved member of the Charleston Church of God, where she sang in the choir for many years. She was the song leader at the Tallahatchie General Hospital Extended Care Facility during their Monday afternoon resident sing-along. Martha was also a member Tallahatchie General Hospital Ladies Auxiliary.
Her hobbies included spending time in Mountain View, Ark., watching the Western channel, and watching her Ole Miss Rebels play football. Martha was always ready and willing to help others in need. Spending time with her friends and family was most precious to her.
