EUREKA SPRINGS, Ark. — Phillip Henry Thornton, III, age 90, passed away Tuesday, March 29, in Eureka Springs, Ark.
Graveside services were held 2 p.m. Sunday, April 10, at Evergreen Cemetery in Carrollton.
He served in the Air Force during World War II.
Formerly of Tutwiler, he served as president of the Farmer’s Coop, president of the Tri-County Hopson Bayou Water Drainage District, president of Thornton Hunting Club at Valley Park, served on the executive board of Tutwiler Bank, president of West Tallahatchie County Board of Education, founder and first president of the Bayou Bend Country Club and was a member of the Episcopal Church.
He was preceded in death by his first wife,Sarah Bryan Thornton; his second wife, Pauline Thornton; a daughter, Sarah Thornton Rushing; and grandaughter,Sarah Elizabeth Rushing.
He is survived by one son, Phillip Henry Thornton, IV, of Eureka Springs, Ark.; a stepson, James Carroll Newton III and stepdaughter, Nancy Newton Shurlds.; three grandchildren, a step-grandchild, and 6 great-grandchildren.
