Although the most recent daytime temperatures in Tallahatchie County might suggest otherwise, we have at times felt a crispness in the air that foretells the soon coming of autumn.
Just two weeks and four days from the date of this newspaper, the fall season officially begins. It will be met favorably by everyone who is tired of the steamy summer conditions. There is no guarantee that Mother Nature will rush to get in sync with Father Time, but we can hope.
Signs of the season have been popping up all around us. High school and college football are underway, the NFL kicks off with a full slate of games this weekend, fall festivals soon will be revving up, and Labor Day — the so-called “last hurrah of summer” — is in the rearview mirror.
Another precursor of fall for many with local ties, the annual National Charleston Day Organization’s reunion/conference in Charleston over the Labor Day weekend by all accounts was a huge success. Many Charleston-area businesses no doubt felt and appreciated a nice late-summer bump in their sales courtesy of the out-of-town guests who visited our area for the occasion.
Labor Day, in general, is one of those mellow, kick-back holidays. What a nice segue to the season of earthy tones — gold, scarlet and orange — that is displayed by the fall foliage.
Spring and autumn are our favorite seasons for many reasons, not the least of which is because we love God’s choice of color palette.
