Louisiana’s new governor knows how to get the attention of Southerners. Inject college football into the discussion.
Democrat John Bel Edwards warned last week that if the state’s Republican-controlled Legislature doesn’t raise taxes to close a huge budget deficit, that state’s universities might have to shut down this spring, including flagship Louisiana State. If it does, LSU football players would lose their eligibility, Edwards said, and next season’s games would have to be cancelled.
Opponents say the governor is trying to scare people to get his way.
Probably so.
But it’s also probably working.
Those who live in the states of the Southeastern Conference may be willing to give up a lot, but not their college football Saturdays.
